Dear Sir/Madam,

I have downloaded the reduced size Latex package, but
when I started to write a document an error message keeps coming up.
It says 'pdftex.sty not found'. I have tried to locate it on my pc but
its not there. I have also tried to find it on CTAN but its not there
also. Have I done something wrong or does this file actually exist
somewhere and I cant find it? Please advise if you can.

Hopefully
yours

I have downloaded the reduced size Latex package,
Not sure what you mean by that but no matter.

It says 'pdftex.sty not found'.
You haven't given much information to go on but it would appear that
your document has

\usepackage{pdftex}

which would generate the error you state. I have not heard of any such
package, so just simply not trying to load it would stop the error
but I can't suggest what you should do instead.

(This isn't really the right list for latex queries, you might be better
at for example http://tex.stackexchange.com)

what were you hoping to achieve with this pdftex.sty? without knowing
that, it is difficult to guess what file it is, whose name you've
muddled into pdftex.sty -- i.e., "i need foo.sty to run on pdftex" -- in
that sentence, what is "foo"?

Many thanks for replying but I've solved the problem.

Such a package is not known to me. Perhaps you wanted to write an
*option*, e.g.:

\usepackage[pdftex]{graphicx}

If the square brackets were exchanged by curly braces, TeX would start
looking for `pdftex.sty` instead of `graphicx.sty` and option `pdftex`.

BTW, in many cases option `pdftex` is not even needed, because many
packages can detect pdfTeX in PDF mode (e.g. via package `ifpdf').

Yours sincerely
